Duo martus (Two Witnesses) Identified
According to the revelation given to Apostle John, Yahweh will have two witnesses that He will give power to prophecy in the end times. The Greek words used for ‘two witnesses’ are ‘duo martus’. Many in the Christianity movement claim to know whom these two will be. Some say Elijah and Enoch since they were “taken” by Yahweh.
24And Enoch walked with Elohim and he [was] not; for Elohim took him. Genesis 5:24
11And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, [there appeared] a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings 2:11
5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because Elohim had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased Elohim. Hebrews 11:5
Some today in Christianity think it could be Moses. It appears that many of today’s Christians have never taken the time to truly study the Old Testament. I myself at one time called myself a Christian and believed by my own knowledge these two witnesses to be Elijah and Enoch, until that is, I studied and allowed Yahweh to open my blind eyes. Until Yahweh opened my eyes, I couldn’t make any sense at all of the Old Testament. Many answers to New Testament questions, however, are found in the Old Testament. When the Apostles preached and spread the gospel of Yeshua the Messiah, they had full knowledge of what the law and prophets had said in what we call the Old Testament, the first five books being the Torah. If we take the time to examine and study, we can unlock all the answers that Yahweh has for us to know.
So can we identify the duo martus?
ABSOLUTELY!!
1And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of Yahweh, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
2But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months.
3And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before Yahweh Elohim of the earth. Revelations 11:1-4
16I Yeshua have sent mine angel (John) to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star. Revelations 22:16
In verse 2 John is told to not measure the outer courts or that outside the temple. This was to be given to the Gentiles or nations, as it should read. Who will be their messenger? Lets look at the next verse and see what it says and we will find in verse 3 it states, AND I will give unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth. So we see that the nations will have these two witnesses, duo martus, witnessing the word and truth of Yahweh and testimony of Yeshua as being the Messiah. Also by wearing sackcloth we know by scripture that these witnesses will be in official mourning.
12And in that day did Yahweh Elohim of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: Isaiah 22:12
So who are these two? Does the bible tell us?
ABSOLUTELY!
Lets look at verse 4 now. It read that these are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the Elohim of the earth. Olive trees and candlesticks? Looks like we need to travel back to the Old Testament for some answers.
1 But now thus saith Yahweh that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. Isaiah 43:1
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith Yahweh, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no Elohim formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 I, even I, am Yahweh; and beside me there is no saviour.
12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange Elohim among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith Yahweh, that I am Elohim. Isaiah 43:10-12
1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus saith Yahweh that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
5 One shall say, I am Yahweh’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto Yahweh, and surname himself by the name of Israel.
6 Thus saith Yahweh the King of Israel, and his redeemer Yahweh of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no Elohim.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.
8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a Elohim beside me? yea, there is no Elohim; I know not any. Isaiah 44:1-8
With that said it is time for a short history lesson. Most Christians do not even realize that Israel split into two kingdoms after the death of King Solomon. Many know of or have heard of the ten lost tribes of Israel but few have really looked into what happened to them. You can read more on the split in
1 Kings 12 and 2 Chronicles 10. Ultimately we have a Southern Kingdom and a Northern Kingdom. The Southern Kingdom becomes the House of Judah containing the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and eventually Levi (the priesthood bloodline).
21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
1 Kings 12:21
12 And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
2 Chron 11:12
The Northern Kingdom became the House of Israel also referred to as Ephraim. It consisted of the 10 tribes that are believed to be lost today. They are Ephraim, Manasseh, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun and Dan.
Now you may ask, where is Joseph? The answer is quite easy. Ephraim and Manasseh are Joseph’s sons. Joseph’s youngest son Ephraim led the Northern Kingdom. Joseph’s tribe is represented with Ephraim. Like Jacob (Israel) in the story of Jacob and Esau, Ephraim received from his grandfather Jacob (Israel) the double portion blessing of the first-born son even though Manasseh was the first-born son to Joseph.
14 And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, Elohim, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the Elohim which fed me all my life long unto this day,
16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.
18 And Joseph said unto his father, not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.
19 And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
20 And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, Elohim make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
21 And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but Elohim shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.
22 Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow. Genesis 48:14-22
Joseph and Ephraim are in the same tribe – a double portion.
So we can see by scriptures that Israel split and became two kingdoms.
In Isaiah 43 & 44 previous mentioned it calls Jacob/Israel Yahweh’s witnesses.
16 Yahweh called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. 17For Yahweh of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal. Jeremiah 11:16-17
1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.
2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of Yahweh unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith Yahweh of hosts.
7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.
8 Moreover the word of Yahweh came unto me, saying,
9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that Yahweh of hosts hath sent me unto you.
10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of Yahweh, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by Yahweh of the whole earth. Zech 4:1-14
The two olive trees are “the anointed ones” – who stand beside Yahweh of the whole earth.
With that in mind, we can reread Revelations 11:4
4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the Elohim of the earth.
Wow! Scripture comes to life! Here we see that the olive trees are symbolic of the house of Judah & Israel.
After the split, Yahweh allowed the two kingdoms to become captured and then scattered the northern tribes into other nations and allowed them to forget their identities as well as Yahweh and His name. They had no idea who they were and today many still haven’t a clue who they are or who they call their Elohim. They may have forgotten and lost their identities and Yahweh’s as well but stand assured that Yahweh never lost anyone.
44 And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am Yahweh their Elohim.
45 But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their Elohim: I am Yahweh. Leviticus 26:44-45
9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who hath formed a Elohim, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a Elohim, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.
16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
17 And the residue thereof he maketh a Elohim, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my Elohim.
18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me. Isaiah 44:1-21
17 Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman.
18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it:
19 And I scattered them among the heathen, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them. Ezekiel 36:17-19
1 At the same time, saith Yahweh, will I be the Elohim of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
2 Thus saith Yahweh, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.
3 Yahweh hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.
5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto Yahweh our Elohim.
7 For thus saith Yahweh; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel. Jeremiah 31:1-7
8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure. Hosea 8:8
Now for a quick look into the New Testament for the olive trees.
16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.
20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 For if Elohim spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Romans 11:16-21
Paul is talking about an olive tree being grafted with a wild olive tree’s branches. The olive tree is the House of Judah and the branch of the wild tree is the House of Israel. The natural branches on the olive tree were cut off due to their unbelief. The tree branches were replaced with wild branches (Gentiles aka House of Israel). They lost their identity and never remembered living knowing Yahweh.
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. Romans 11:25
Not only was Israel blind to the truth but Judah also. That is until the fullness of the Gentiles or nations of Israel (tribes) has come.
19 And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. Genesis 48:19
Ephraim and his seed shall become the fullness of the nations.
22 What if Elohim, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living Elohim. Romans 9:22-26
The lost tribes that were put away for their sins will be brought back and called by Yahweh.
1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5 But with many of them Elohim was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 1 Corinthians 10:1-5
2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 1 Corinthians 12:2
Paul identifies himself and those in Corinth as being the descendants of the Israelites brought out of Egypt.
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of Elohim, unto our fathers: Acts 26:6
Paul makes known that he knew the background nationality of the gentiles he was sent to preach to concerning the gospel.
1 James, a servant of Elohim and of Yahweh Yeshua the Messiah, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. James 1:1
James fully knew the believers identity when he added them to his letter.
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. John 10:16
Yeshua himself tells his disciples he has others not in that group. He was speaking of the lost tribes, the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 15:24
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:44
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
John 6:65
Those given to Yeshua by Yahweh are the physical Israelites from both the house of Judah and the House of Israel – Ephraim. They are the two olive trees, duo martus, of Revelations 11.
We now can look for the candlesticks in Revelations 11:4.
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living Elohim: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our Elohim in their foreheads.
4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.
6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.
7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.
8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. Revelations 7:1-8
These are the ones that have the seal (name) of Yahweh and the testimony of Yeshua as the Messiah. These 144,000 (a completed number) from the 12 tribes of the ONE House of Israel make up the two witnesses.
The duo martus identified.
All this and more can be found and learned by simply applying the following as we are instructed to do.
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto Elohim, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
Identity matters. By studying we can find our identities and better understand Yahweh’s word and our part in fulfilling His will.
All scripture was taken from the King James Version unless noted.
The sacred names of Elohim and the Messiah have been changed to their actual Hebrew names because that is the preference of the author of this article.
