Speaking in Tongues…Is it for today?

Posted by Lynn on August 1, 2008

I grew up pentecostal. This subject was a tough one for me to grasp at first but ever since I have been on this truth seeking journey to rid my mind and heart of the lies I had been taught, it has started becoming easier to understand and pieces of the puzzle continue to mold together and take shape. All harmonizing with the word  of YHWH.

Is speaking in tongues for today? What is speaking in tongues? Who can do it?

I believe tongues have ceased. I grew up thinking speaking in tongues was the babble I heard at church while adults (unlearned and on milk) jump around the room. Then the room would grow silent and usually the same person speaking babble would interpret for themselves and tell others what they were saying. First off this is so unbiblical and second babbling is not tongues. Speaking in tongues is speaking an understood language.

On the day of Pentecost there was a multitude of people and you could go a few miles and the language would change.  This multitude os people spoke different languages and yet Peter spoke his own language and it was understood by everyone in their own language. That is REMARKABLE!  This type of tongues was needed so that Peter’s words could be understood. This was the work of YHWH. Today we have so much technology that anyone can learn a second or third language. When a non-English person goes to a hospital for care, the hospital gets an interpreter so that the patient can understand. Today tongues are everywhere in a different sense. In church the ones that claim to be speaking in the tongues of the angels are the very ones that call evil, good and good, evil having itchy ears and swayed by every form of doctrine. These are those that are destroyed for their lack of knowledge. We are told to put away our childish things and mature in the love of the truth.

So there is a place for other languages but if you speak to me in Spanish or any other language other than what I speak, remain silent or have an interpreter.  Speak words that can be understood because babbling edifies no one and quite frankly is childish. Grow up and get some meat. God doesn’t want a bride in diapers.
